Physical Characteristics. Lee County is in southwest Florida and is bordered by Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico and by Charlotte, Hendry, and Collier counties. The Caloosahatchee River bisects the county. The county has 803.05 square miles of land and 238.0 square miles of water for a total of 1041.05 square miles. The average January temperature is 63.8 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average August temperature 81.5 degrees Fahrenheit. The average annual rainfall is 52.39 inches.
History. Lee County was established from Monroe County in 1887 and named for General Robert E. Lee.
